Jiwami

FAQ

Getting Started

What do I need to run Jiwami?

Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Download the installer, activate your license key, and start a run.

How do I install it?

Download the installer from your purchase email, run it, and follow setup.

Is there a Mac or Linux version?

Not yet. The current release is Windows only.

What does a typical first run look like?

Choose one source. Jiwami runs smart selection, normalizes, adds definitions, pitch diagrams, supported media, and exports an Anki deck.

Processing time depends on source length and your computer.

Workflow

Why use this instead of building cards one by one?

Manual mining makes you pause and build one card at a time. Jiwami turns a full source into an Anki deck in one run.

How is this different from pre-made decks?

Pre-made decks use someone else's content. Jiwami builds cards from what you watched or read.

Why real dictionaries instead of AI generation?

Cards need stable meanings and readings. Jiwami uses dictionary data instead of generated definitions.

Can I still do manual mining too?

Yes. You can edit exported cards and mix Jiwami with your existing Anki workflow.

Input & Content

What input formats does Jiwami support?

Video files, supported video URLs, subtitle files, EPUB books, manga, pictures, and plain text.

Each run uses one source.

Can I use YouTube videos directly?

Yes. Paste a YouTube URL. Jiwami works only when Japanese subtitles are available. Auto-generated subtitles are not recommended, and the same applies to any currently supported streaming service.

Does it work with raw Japanese text?

Yes. Use a plain text file. Text runs still get words, definitions, pitch diagrams, kanji breakdowns, and context.

What about manga?

Jiwami supports manga and pictures with Japanese text. Accuracy depends on image quality and font style.

The first manga run downloads two small open-source models.

Can I process multiple episodes at once?

No. Run episodes one by one.

Output & Cards

What's on each card?

Cards include the word, definitions, readings, pitch diagram, kanji breakdown, and source context.

Video clips or images appear when the source supports them.

How does smart selection work?

Smart selection is powered by a small custom fine-tuned Japanese model trained on over 106,000 manually reviewed token labels, and is then run through a complex normalization layer.

Are the definitions actually good?

Jiwami ranks dictionary matches and shows the best definition for the context.

Does Jiwami include pitch accent?

Yes. Jiwami generates pitch-accent diagrams from a local pitch database with over 380,000 entries when the word is covered.

Can I customize the card layout?

Cards use the Vintage Scholar theme by default. New themes are currently in the works.

Technical

Does it work offline?

Deck generation runs locally. Jiwami does not upload your media or text for processing.

Network access is used for licensing, updates, supported streaming URLs, and first manga setup.

How fast is it?

It depends on source length, clip extraction, dictionaries, and your computer. Later runs can be faster because repeated words are skipped.

Does it need a GPU?

Jiwami can run on CPU, and on supported Windows hardware it can use GPU acceleration when available.

How does duplicate detection work?

Jiwami remembers generated words and skips them in later runs.

You can reset it in Settings if needed.

Where is my data stored?

Your content, settings, cache, and exports live on your machine.

Purchase, activation, and update checks use Jiwami's licensing services and Lemon Squeezy.

Can I limit the number of cards per run?

Yes, choose how many cards Jiwami selects, or leave it uncapped to get every possible word from the source.

Can I filter by JLPT level?

Yes, set a JLPT level in Settings and Jiwami selects that level and easier, while kana-only cards always stay in.

Can I import my old Anki decks?

Yes, export them from Anki as .apkg files, then import them in Jiwami. Jiwami stores those words as known so they are skipped in later runs.

Dictionaries

What dictionary format does it support?

MDX dictionaries.

Which dictionaries work best?

Jiwami includes built-in English definitions powered by JMDict, so it works out of the box.

For richer monolingual cards, supported MDX dictionaries are bring your own for now. Each supported dictionary has custom scoring, rendering, and cleanup work: 日本国語大辞典, 広辞苑, デジタル大辞泉, スーパー大辞林, 明鏡国語辞典, 新明解国語辞典, 三省堂国語辞典, 岩波国語辞典, 日本大百科全書, Wikipedia, 使い方の分かる類語例解辞典, Weblio類語辞典, Weblio対義語辞書, 類語玉手箱, 実用日本語表現辞典, 複合動詞レキシコン, 日本語表現活用辞典, 語源由来辞典, 日本語俗語辞書, 全訳古語辞典, Pixiv, and 名称発音大辞典.

Can I add my own dictionaries?

Yes. Add your MDX files in Settings and Jiwami uses them on the next run.
